The Square-Cube Scaling Trap: By far the most common conversion blunder occurs when converting two-dimensional (area) and three-dimensional (volume) quantities using linear conversion factors:

  • 1 foot = 12 inches, but 1 square foot = (12 in)² = 144 square inches (NOT 12!).
  • 1 cubic foot = (12 in)³ = 1,728 cubic inches (NOT 12!).
  • 1 meter = 100 cm, but 1 cubic meter (m³) = (100 cm)³ = 1,000,000 cm³ (one million cubic centimeters!).
